Teachers are Students Too!

In the rapidly changing world of education, it has never been more important to maintain a wide array of knowledge in order to be successful. Often, students and parents forget that a good, quality teacher not only instructs, but must also continue to learn. With advancements in technology, changes in state mandated standards and increasing pressure to master standardized tests, a teacher must be a student as well.

There are several books that are recommended for teachers and administrators alike. These books offer advice and instruction on leadership traits, improving professional development and growth as an educator. The books are suggested for any professional working a leadership role. The following books can be found at Springfield-Greene County Library.

The tipping point : how little things can make a big difference by Malcolm Gladwell. The three rules of epidemics -- The law of the few: connectors, mavens, and salesmen -- The stickiness factor: Sesame Street, Blue's Clues, and the educational virus -- The power of context (part one): Bernie Goetz and the rise and fall of New York City crime -- The power of context (part two): the magic number one hundred and fifty -- Case study: rumors, sneakers, and the power of translation -- Case study: suicide, smoking, and the search for the unsticky cigarette -- Conclusion: focus, test, and believe.

Brain rules : 12 principles for surviving and thriving at work, home, and school by John Medina. In Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule--what scientists know for sure about how our brains work--and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives

How full is your bucket? : positive strategies for work and life by Tom Rath and Donald O. Clifton. An inspirational book about filling the buckets of others. When you are negative you end up taking from somebody's bucket; when you are positive, encouraging, and solution oriented, you are able to add to someone's bucket.
Drive : the surprising truth about what motivates us by Daniel H. Pink Pink argues that the secret to high performance and satisfaction in today's world is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world

Tribes : we need you to lead us by Seth Godin. According to Godin, Tribes are groups of people aligned around an idea, connected to a leader and to each other. Tribes make our world work, and always have. The new opportunity is that it's easier than ever to find, organize, and lead a tribe. The Web has enabled an explosion of all kinds of tribes--and created shortage of people to lead them. This is the growth industry of our time. Tribes (the book) will help you understand exactly what's at stake, and why you can and should lead a tribe of your own.
