Spend an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe at Tell-Tale Chautauqua
We’ve been talking a lot about him, encouraging you to read him. Now you can spend an evening with Edgar Allan Poe – or at least a dead ringer for him.
Poe impersonator Campbell “Lou” Harmon will bring the master of horror to life when he presents “An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe – Fact and Fantasy,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in the Library Center auditorium. Come at 7 p.m. to hear Ozarks’ favorite Judy Domeny Bowen perform “Terrible Tales – Missouri Tragedy Ballads.”
They’re part of the Tell-Tale Chautauqua performance series that begins at 7 p.m. Friday in the auditorium with Poe Expressed. Faculty and students of Missouri State University’s college of Arts and Letters will present the many facets of Poe’s life and work in song, dance, readings and images.
These are a few of the many programs planned throughout April as part of the Big Read, the Library’s one book, one community celebration. This year we’re encouraging all to read “Great Tales of Edgar Allan Poe” and join in library and off-site programs, listed in Bookends or at thelibrary.org/bigread.
You won’t want to miss meeting and hearing author Margaret Stohl, co-author of the book series “Beautiful Creatures,” now a major motion picture. Stohl will speak and sign books at 7 p.m. April 30 at the Springfield Art Museum. Seating is limited so tickets are required, but they’re free and available through April at all Library branches.

The Library’s offer of free checkouts of family passes to the Springfield Discovery Center has exceeded our expectations. The 20 reusable passes, purchased with a grant from the Missouri Parent Information Resource Center, and have been in constant use since they went into effect Oct. 1, 2012.
We want as many families as possible to take advantage of this offer before they expire Sept. 30, 2013, so we tweaked the offer just a bit. Effective April 1, the passes will check out for only four days at a stretch instead of the original seven-day checkout. That should give families enough time to use the pass, and get the passes back in circulation faster for the next family. The passes are divided among the 10 branches, and require a valid library card.
