Learn Helpful Tips During Money Smart Week April 20-27; Join Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale April 23-28

April at the Library is crawling with Edgar Allan Poe programs, part of our Big Read celebration, but there’s so much more happening you won’t want to miss.

Money Smart Week is Saturday through April 27. If you have money, need to save money or want more money out of life, learn tips from money experts that week at several branches. Eleven money and consumer experts headline a series of programs for all ages – ending with Document Disposal Day, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. April 27 at the Library Center. Cintas Document Management will shred your documents on-site (limit of five bags or boxes).

Learn how to save hundreds of dollars in Couponing 101, Smart Money Tips for 2013 and Thrifty Dressing. Understand your credit report; get investing basics while children learn about money. Check out the story time series for children, Making Sense of Numbers, that week.

It’s almost time for the huge Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale, April 23-28 at Remington’s, 1655 W. Republic Road. Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday-Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, half-price day; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday, or Bag Day – $1 per, or $5 from better books.

This is known throughout the region as one of the biggest and best sales of used books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, vinyl records, puzzles and board games. The Friends make it easy to find what you want, organizing items by genre, age group and price.

Friends Night Preview Sale is 5-8 p.m. Monday, April 22. Friends members get in free. Not a Friends member? Pay $5 to get in and you can join anytime that night.

Children's books are 50 cents or less; adult and young adult books and most audiovisual items are $1 or less; better books are $2 and up. Friends accept only cash or checks.

Free tickets are available at any branch to see “Beautiful Creatures” co-author Margaret Stohl at 7 p.m. April 30 at the Springfield Art Museum. Tickets are required.
