We're Recycling a House to Make Way for the Brentwood Branch Renovation
We're taking a first step with the Brentwood Branch Library renovation project! And you can be part of it.
A house at 1911 E. Wayland Drive that the Library District bought to make way for the project must come down, so we're going to "reduce, reuse and recycle" as much of it as possible with the help of Habitat for Humanity and the Ozarks Green Building Coalition.
This is a first-ever partnership between the two organizations and the Springfield-Greene County Library District.
Habitat for Humanity has lined up volunteers to deconstruct the three-bedroom house in two stages -- interior, and then exterior. After each stage, the reclaimed items will be sold in a yard sale open to the public on April 27 and at a future date in May on the Wayland property lawn. Ozarks Green Building Coalition and Habitat for Humanity will split the sales proceeds, and the Library will pay for the hauling out of any non-recyclable landfill material.
The yard sales will be a do-it-yourselfers dream. The sale dates are:
- 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, for interior items including cabinets, plumbing and light fixtures, interior trim, doors, storm windows, hot water heater, carpet, fireplace brick and paneling.
- In May on a date to be determined later, the sale will feature exterior items including windows and exterior doors, framing lumber, garage door, chain link fencing and landscaping items.
Additional items such as electrical wiring, duct work and shingles will be recycled but will not be included in the sale.
We can accomplish so much with this one project: The all-volunteer labor will save taxpayers in demolition costs, the two organizations will share sales proceeds to further their community projects, we'll minimize what goes into the landfill while reusing and recycling valuable resources, and the recycling effort could also strengthen the Library's application if it decides to pursue LEED building certifiation in the Brentwood renovation.
The Library acquired the property adjacent to the Brentwood Branch in August 2012, and is pursuing rezoning of the property for government use. The property will be used for staff parking to free up public parking at the main entrance, and for a neighborhood buffer. The Library Foundation will manage a capital campaign for the estimated $2.1 million renovation.
We're excited to take this first step with these two community organizations and you, our patrons, and we'll be eager to share the architects' concepts for the renewed Brentwood Branch.
