Friends of the Library Spring Sale Tops $115,488
We have a lot to celebrate this week – from a wildly successful Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale to a large grant for a World War I project. And coming May 18: the Summer Reading Program for tiny tots, kids, teens and adults.
Thanks to donors and buyers of the sale items, the Friends of the Library hit its third-highest sales record in its Spring Book Sale April 23-28, with $115,488.92 in sales of used books, CDs, DVDs and more. The Friends Night Preview Sale on April 22 hit a preview night record, with $23,027.66 in sales in three brisk hours.
Legendary for its successful sales, the Friends hit its all-time high at its 2012 Fall Book Sale, with $125,779.01 in sales. And Friends members are already preparing for the fall sale Oct. 22-27 at Remington’s.
Proceeds from the sale benefit the library branches, fund special programs and the Friends’ book program for preschoolers, Wee Read. Each sale is important for another reason – the Friends pledged $300,000 over three years toward the Brentwood Branch Renovation.
Speaking of renovation, Habitat for Humanity and Ozarks Green Building Coalition continue to deconstruct the house at 1911 E. Wayland Drive to make way for the Brentwood renovation. These partners are helping us reduce, reuse and recycle everything possible from the house.
Interior building materials were sold at a yard sale there in late April. The public sale of all usable exterior materials, postponed due to bad weather, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at the house.

The Library was awarded a $74,300 grant from the Missouri State Library to continue work on a statewide project, “Over There: Missouri and the Great War.” The grant will allow project staff to digitally photograph, archive and put online 35 Missouri WWI collections, which amounts to 4,765 pages of material. The collections include documents, photos and artifacts.
The project seeks to enhance the understanding of Missouri’s role in the Great War in preparation for the centennial remembrance beginning in 2014. Our partners include the Missouri History Museum, St. Louis; and the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine , Kirksville. Earlier, the project received a $47,803 startup grant through the Missouri State Library.
