Passing of Ely Paris
One of Springfield’s oldest settler’s died yesterday
"Ely Paris, the well known proprietor of Paris Springs and one of the first settlers in Greene County, died at his home at the springs yesterday afternoon.
"Mr. Paris came to Greene County in the 50’s [1850's] and was a resident of Springfield until about 1866, when he moved to Mt. Vernon where he lived until about 1868. In 1868 he moved to Lawrence County and purchased a tract of some two hundred acres. His purchase included the now famous Paris Springs property. While actively engaged in farming and stock raising he improved the ground surrounding the springs by erecting a number of buildings. The health giving qualities of the water becoming known, hundreds flocked to the locality, where they have regained health and vitality. Many of Springfield’s citizens make the springs their summer resort.
"Mr. Paris was married in Springfield to Mrs. Anna E. Young, nee Bigby, January 1, 1868. The union resulted in one child, Ely, who alone survives his parents, the mother having died some years ago. Mr. Paris was well known to many of the older residents of Springfield who will be pained to hear of his death."
