Hoopla Takes Library Service to the Next Level

What kind of library service would get an adult so excited that she calls it “…the most amazing thing in the history of amazing things!”?

Hoopla, is what.

It’s a new, free feature that allows you to electronically borrow movies, TV episodes, audiobooks and music albums and access them from any compatible device. If you have a smartphone, tablet, desktop or portable laptop and a library card, you can borrow them. You just need an Internet connection using Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari or FireFox Web browsers; tablets and smartphones (iOS 6 and Android 4.0).

The library budget doesn’t allow us to buy every movie or TV episode, music collection or audiobook. But through the subscription to Hoopla, we instantly made more than 300,000 titles available to you at a fraction of the cost.

Even better, there’s no waiting for a title – multiple users can borrow the same thing at the same time.

You can start watching or listening to it on your desktop computer, stop it and then resume watching it later on another device – Hoopla remembers where you left off. And you can borrow any title 24/7.

Checkout periods are three days for videos, one week for music, three weeks for audiobooks. Each library card holder can borrow up to 12 titles per month. When your checkout period is over, the item goes away, putting an end to late fees.

Hoopla was designed and published by Midwest Tape, LLC, a leader in library media service for more than 25 years.

Here’s how to get started: Go to thelibrary.org and click on the word Hoopla. Create an account with your library card number. Then click Browse to find a title, click Borrow and watch or listen to your selection. It’s that simple.

That’s what we were telling a friend, who signed on to Hoopla and began listening to music last week. Here’s how that went:

She: I'm listening to the "Pitch Perfect" cd! This is so cool!
Library: Yay! You get 12 checkouts a month. Use them wisely.
She: Okay so like... no waiting?
Library: Nope. Everything's available ALL THE TIME.
She: Shut the front door. This is the most amazing thing in the history of amazing things!!!

What will you watch for free?
