Tickets for "An Edwardian Evening" on Sale Sept. 9; Food for Thought Provides Opportunity for Community Discussions
If you’re among the millions of U.S. TV viewers who are locked on the PBS hit series “Downton Abbey,” you will want to meet one of the authors who helped inspire it – Carol McD. Wallace – and indulge in “An Edwardian Evening.”
You’ll be treated to English sweets, savories and a talk by the co-author of “To Marry an English Lord” from 7-10 p.m. Sept. 27, in the Veridian Event Center, 309 South Ave. Wallace will also sell and sign her book. Ozarks Public Television, which airs the series, and the library’s Between Friends Gift Shops will provide prize drawings.
Tickets go on sale Monday, Sept. 9, only at the Library Center, Brentwood Branch and Park Central Branch libraries. Tickets are $20 for students and $25 for non-students, cash or check only. Limit eight tickets per person. For details call 616-0564 or 616-0566.
"An Edwardian Evening" is the kickoff of a weekend Sept. 27-28 devoted to great words – written, spoken or sung. We’re calling it Wordfest, and it will feature talks and performances by popular authors, poets and songwriters including “Supe” Granda of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. All the events (except Wallace’s talk) are free and planned in downtown venues. There are events for adults and young families.

From English sweets and savories, we invite you to an Ozarks soup dinner series in October. Registration begins Monday for the first of three sessions called Food For Thought: A Civil Discussion on …” at the Library Center. Each night begins with a complimentary soup and bread dinner, followed by the program. To register call 882-0714. Seating is limited to 75 adults.
Session one is 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 3, featuring a guest panel to discuss Fighting Fair in the Culture Wars. We frame the issue: Our community is growing more diverse. What will it take for us to embrace our differences and maintain civility? What are the repercussions if we don’t? You can weigh in Oct. 3.
