Grant Extends Discovery Center Pass Program Through Sept. 2014; Discuss Community Issues at Food For Thought
A popular family program that was due to expire last week has been extended another year.
Families can continue to use their library cards to check out a free pass to The Discovery Center of Springfield. The program was due to expire Sept. 30, but a Musgrave Foundation grant given to the downtown children’s hands-on museum will extend the passes through September 2014.
The program previously was funded with part of a different grant given to the Springfield-Greene County Libraries.
The library partners frequently with the Discovery Center, but the family pass project is the first of its kind between the two entities. It proved wildly successful, giving many families their first chance to experience all the interactive activities.
The grant provides 20 reusable passes that families can check out – just like a library book – with a valid library card. Each pass admits up to four people – at least one adult and no more than three children age 3 and older. Families may use the pass as many times as they wish during the checkout period. Passes automatically expire upon the due date.
Some changes went into effect Oct. 1:
- The Mobile Library, the bookmobile serving more than 18,000 individuals annually, now has passes for checkout. They will be good for seven days.
- That means library branches will have fewer passes to check out, but passes will be still be available at most branches. Those passes will be valid for five days.

Seats are still available at the two upcoming Food for Thought sessions on Thursday, Oct. 10 and Oct. 17 at the Library Center. Each one features a complimentary soup and bread dinner catered by Branch Bistro, a project of Victory Mission. After we break bread, a panel and moderator will lead a civil discussion on select issues facing Springfield-area residents.
Thursday’s topic will explore what’s happening to social discourse as people become attached to their phones and iPads and other devices anytime, anywhere. The Oct. 17 topic looks at poverty in the Springfield area and the consequences it has on different realms of our lives.
