Plan nine-story structure for McGregor Company

Springfield News-Leader, December 13, 1936, page C1

“Construction of a new nine-story, fireproof building for the McGregor Hardware Company, will get under way this week, Earl Hawkins, architect, announced yesterday.

“While one crew of workmen razed the old four-story brick warehouse which occupies a part of the site of the new structure, another under General Contractor John Olsen began the work of pouring concrete footing for the building.

“It will be located on East Water Street, adjoining the five-story warehouse built by the McGregor firm in 1929. The new building will have a 91-foot front along the Frisco tracks to the north of it. It will be 65 feet wide, with a concrete parking space for trucks on its Water Street side.

“First floor of the building will house the company’s offices and shipping department. The other eight floors will be used for storage, as will the fire-story building adjoining it.

“The building will be of steel, concrete and brick construction, to conform in general appearance with its companion structure.

“Contract calls for completion by May 1, Hawkins said.

“The company will move from its present location on St. Louis Street, where it had been for the past 55 years, before June 1, when its lease on the property expires.

There are two McGregor catalogs, 1928 and 1937, in the rare book collection at the Library Center, The images above are from these catalogs.
