Find Great Last Minute Bargains at Bag Day; Visit the Library for Halloween Fun

Sunday, Oct. 27, is the final day of the Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale, and that means it’s Bag Day. Doors are open from 1-5 p.m. at Remington’s, 1655 W. Republic Road.

This years-old tradition helps the Friends clear out the remaining inventory from the week-long event so they can start fresh for the spring sale in 2014, and gives shoppers an incentive to come back on the final Sunday of the sale for a bargain bonanza.

On Bag Day, the Friends volunteers hand out sacks to each shopper. Fill the sack with as many items as you can and pay one $1 – or $5 for sacks filled on the better books side. Since the Friends began the sale on Oct. 22 with four tractor-trailers filled with books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and more, there should be lots left to stuff in your bags.

And since book buying is habit forming, you’ll want to save these dates of the Friends Spring Book Sale: April 29-May 4, 2014.

We’re having some Halloween fun this week at the library branches for all ages. Drop by the Willard Branch Library drive-up window with your canine friend Monday through Thursday and your pet will get a treat. While there, enter a drawing for a gift certificate from All Pet Supplies.

At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the Strafford and Willard branches will celebrate with not-so-scary storytimes and Halloween treats for all ages – and a candy hunt in the Willard branch for infants to age 6.

Kids in grades 7-12 can watch Halloween movies at 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Midtown Carnegie Branch. Call 862-0135 for movie titles.

Wednesday at 10 a.m. is Little Monster’s Storytime at the Republic Branch for ages 1-6, so wear your costumes for some stories, songs and activities.

Halloween Storytime and a trick-or-treat – in your costume – through the library for all ages is on for 10 and 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the Library Center.

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, all ages are invited to celebrate Halloween with Uncle Gregory at the Park Central Branch. Join us for a spooky evening with Springfield’s favorite (and only) horror-hosted TV show, “The New Uncle Gregory Horror Hour.” We’ll show a classic episode followed by a premiere of a new Halloween episode.
