Friends of the Library 2013 Fall Book Sale Hits $125,218.74

Used book, music and movie lovers from across the Ozarks helped push the Friends of the Library 2013 Fall Book Sale tally to $125,218.74 in sales. That’s the second-highest sales amount in the Friends history, and only $560.27 less than the October 2012 record sales of $125,779.01. This year’s sale was Oct. 22-27 at Remington’s, with a Friends Night Preview Sale Oct. 21.

“It was a very successful sale,” said Jim Moore, Friends president-elect and book sale co-chair. "I want to thank everyone for coming out to help support the Friends."

The public and the Springfield-Greene County Libraries weed and donate books, DVDs, CDs and audiobooks throughout the year. Friends members collect, sort, price and store the haul until it’s time for the sales in the spring and fall.

The Friends began this sale with four tractor-trailer loads of items and sold most of them. Some of the remaining books were donated to nonprofit agencies in the Springfield area, others were recycled.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers,” said Sandy Perry, past president of the Friends and book sale co-chair. “We had 350 who volunteered their time, some people working as many as 80 hours during the sale.”
Perry added, “We could not do the sale without our volunteers and the wonderful public who bought books.”

Proceeds from the Friends sales go back to the Springfield-Greene County Library District as grants for free public concerts, author visits during The Big Read, performers during the Summer Reading Program, library equipment and more. In 2013, the Friends also pledged $300,000 over three years toward the future renovation of the Brentwood Branch Library. A total of $50,000 from the fall sale will go toward that pledge, Moore said.

The public is welcome to donate their used books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, VHS tapes, videocassettes, vinyl records, puzzles and board games at any branch of the Springfield-Greene County Library District.

The Friends have already begun pricing donated books for the spring 2014 sale on April 29-May 4.
