Kids Can Shop Big with Small Budgets at Annual Holiday Store Starting Nov. 30

Planning to shop after Thanksgiving? Let the kids get in on it, too, at the annual Holiday Store and Holiday Open House.

The Holiday Store kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Library Center. A meeting room becomes a festive store where kids can shop for friends and family through Dec. 8.

The library’s Between Friends Gift Shops staff shop all year for gifts priced at 25 cents to $5 – just right for kids’ budgets – and the store is appropriate for children up to age 18. Library volunteers help each child shop within his or her budget and wrap the gifts there. Parents or siblings can help, if they prefer.

This year’s treasures include holiday ornaments, picture frames, jewelry, compasses, cell phone lights, calendars and mugs. Siblings and friends will like Webkinz stuffed animals, temporary tattoos, necklaces, ear buds, lip gloss, LED keychain lights and sticker books of all kinds.

The Holiday Store is a fun way to work in a math lesson with children using their own money. It’s also a great lesson in the “multiplier effect” – proceeds from the gifts they buy help fund the library’s annual Summer Reading Program. That totaled about $3,800 this year.

While you’re there, visit the Holiday Open House from 9:30-11 a.m. in the auditorium, where we’ll have games, crafts, Reindeer school, treats and take photos with Santa.

Holiday Store hours are 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday; Nov. 30; 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2- Saturday, Dec. 7; and 1-4 p.m. Sundays Dec. 1 and 8.

On Dec. 7 you can go to the Library Station for the Holiday Open House from 9:30-11 a.m., Santa visits from 9:30-10:30 a.m. The Holiday Store is 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. that day only.

The Brentwood Branch Dec. 7 Holiday Open House is open 9:30 a.m.-noon; Santa is there 11 a.m.-noon. The Holiday Store is open 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. that day only.
