Arbor Day

Did you hear the news? Springfield was recently recognized as a Tree City USA for the 23rd year in a row! This designation, bestowed by the Arbor Day Foundation, is only acquired after cities meet the Arbor Day Foundation's standards. Currently, this honor is shared by over 3,000 communities nationwide. The award comes just in time for National Arbor Day, which falls on the last Friday in April.

National Arbor Day, often thought of as the "tree holiday," started in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. On this day Nebraskans planted more than one million trees! By 1907 the holiday was celebrated from coast-to-coast and the tradition is still going strong.

The Ozarks is home to many avid "tree growers." If the Spring season has you thinking about looking for those gardening gloves, take a moment to peruse this list of like minded groups in the area. Or, if your interest goes beyond just growing trees, we have a recent Community Matters article for that, too!
