Family Pets in 1901
The importance of family pets in the early 1900’s is illustrated in an obituary of the Dameron family’s pet horse from the Springfield, Mo. Republican, June 13, 1901, page 8.
“Rattler” Is Dead
James A. Dameron buried his pet horse with becoming honors.
“Rattler” the pet family horse of James A. Dameron died Tuesday of the distemper after an illness of a month. He was nearly 10 years old and known by everybody on the north side. The horse was valued at about $150. He was unusually intelligent and the family felt his loss very keenly. “Rattler” was buried near the National cemetery with becoming honors. The family shed tears on account of the death of their beloved pet.
