Food For Fines Benefits Ozarks Food Harvest and You
Sunday, Jan. 26, is the beginning of the library’s fifth, week-long Food For Fines drive to benefit Ozarks Food Harvest and you.
From Sunday, Jan. 26, through Saturday, Feb. 1, for each item of nonperishable food you deliver to any branch of the Springfield-Greene County Library District or the Mobile Library, we will deduct 50 cents from your overdue fines. (This excludes fines for lost or damaged items.)
On Feb. 4, all the donated items will be given to Ozarks Food Harvest to refill its shelves. Ozarks Food Harvest is the Feeding America food bank for southwest Missouri, serving more than 200 nonprofit organizations and programs across 28 Ozarks counties. The Food Bank distributes 10 million meals annually to 170,000 unduplicated individuals.
Since our partnership began four years ago, library patrons have donated almost 32,000 pounds of food during Food For Fines. Some of the donations have come from individuals who didn’t even have library fines. Each year the library has waived an average of $3,900 in fines.
The food bank needs tuna and canned meat, peanut butter, canned vegetables and fruit, soups and stews. Boxed goods such as cereal and macaroni and cheese are also accepted. (No expired, dented or damaged items and no glass containers, please.)

Three fun events are coming up this week:
If you like cooking shows, you’ll love Chef Chadwick Isom from Hy-Vee and registered dietician Kristen White when they visit at 7 p.m. Monday in the Library Center auditorium. They will demonstrate simple, delicious and healthy recipes with inexpensive, fresh ingredients. To register call 882-0714.
At 1 p.m. Saturday in the Midtown Carnegie Branch, adults are invited to enjoy living history, food samples and dress reminiscent of the Civic Club gatherings of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance. It’s a great way to experience some history and kick off African-American History Month. Guests include Missouri State University intern Briana Simmons and African-American Read-In members.
“The Three Little Pigs” by Springfield Regional Opera comes to the Library Center auditorium at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for kids in K-6. It’s a fun, operatic music performance set to a story all kids know. Arias and ensembles are excerpted from classic operas. Can’t make it? The show is also scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Park Central Branch.
