Tap Into Your Inner Adventurer with Big Read Programs; Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale April 29-May 4

The library’s Big Read programs so far this month celebrating “The Call of the Wild” have tapped our inner adventurer, as we’d hoped. The outdoor skills programs and writer-explorers – from Pam Flowers to Tim Ernst – have filled library auditoriums, and there are more to come.

The next Big Read author is adventurer and survivalist Cade Courtley, a former Navy SEAL whose career has taken him to classified, high-risk operations around the world with SEAL Teams One and Two. Courtley, who has written a SEAL survival guide for the rest of us, will talk at 7 p.m. April 24 at the Springfield Art Museum auditorium, 1111 E. Brookside Drive.

His background in military Special Operations led him to host and produce the Spike TV/Discovery International series “Surviving Disaster” in 2010. All ages are welcome, and Courtley will sell and sign his book after the talk.

A full schedule of events is available at thelibrary.org/bigread, or in the library’s Bookends magazine available at any branch.

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, all ages can hear national turkey calling champion Ralph Duren imitate nearly 75 other kinds of wildlife. Registration required, call 888-4237.

Adults will learn useful wilderness survival skills from Bo Brown, of First Earth Wilderness School, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 21, at the Library Station. He’ll cover making a fire, creating a shelter and constructing basic tools.

On Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in the Midtown Carnegie Branch, Mike Mihalik will offer ideas about some of the best, family-friendly day trips and adventure excursions in the region.
