Author Speaks About Life with Asperger's May 12 at Library Center; Find Gifts Mom Will Love at Between Friends Gift Shop

Aaron Likens was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome – a high-functioning form of autism -- at age 20. Some children and adults with the diagnosis, the characteristic difficulty with social interactions, restricted range of interests or repetitive behaviors struggle to live fulfilled, productive lives.

Not Aaron. At age 30, he is a public speaker who has given hope to others like him and their families. He is the author of “Finding Kansas: Living and Decoding Asperger’s Syndrome,” and an Autism Ambassador for Life Skills/TouchPoint Autism Services, in St. Louis. He also writes a blog, “Living on the Other Side of the Wall.”

Aaron will bring his story to the Library Center auditorium for all ages at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 12. His goal in giving his presentations to children, families, police and teachers is to understand how the mind of a person with the disorder works. He will sell and sign his book after the event.

Moms usually say they don’t need gifts on Mother’s Day – “Just a hug and an ‘I love you,’ will do.” But a little gift from the Between Friends Gift Shops is a great way to say “Happy Mother’s Day,” too.

Infinity scarves, jewelry, spring décor, garden ornaments, journals and gifts for the book lover are priced below retail at the gift shops, and proceeds from the sales help support library programs – so you’re spreading the love even further.

Shop hours at the Library Center are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday. Hours at the Library Station are 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday only. A limited number of gifts are available at the Brentwood Branch during library hours. And you can order online at betweenfriendsgiftshops.org.
