Help "Raise the Woof" for Brentwood Branch Library

Dog houseLoyal library visitors have been itching to dig into the ReNew Brentwood campaign, the $2.5 million fundraising effort to help renovate the beloved Brentwood Branch Library.

The Library Foundation will kick off the public campaign once it is further along in the major gifts phase, but we have an opportunity for everyone to scratch that itch right now.

We’re inviting kids and adults to help “Raise the Woof” by entering a raffle from July 7-26 to win a dog house for a deserving pup – and the proceeds will help ReNew Brentwood.

The raffle is $1 per ticket – six for $5, and you can participate at any branch including Brentwood now through July 26. The drawing will be July 30 at the Brentwood Branch.
It’s a howling good story of how a library came to own a dog house.

It began with a group of parents of Field Elementary School students representing a project they call Stars. The project’s goal is to foster participation and a willingness to try and take a risk to do new things.

As part of a service-action-learning project through Stars, Field School second-graders designed and drew a dog house while their parents assembled materials generously donated by Lowe’s and spent countless hours constructing three dog houses.

Once complete, the second-graders painted the houses green with other colorful embellishments, and then donated each house to three organizations for use as fundraising opportunities.

Field School teachers say this project, in particular, gave children an opportunity to step outside themselves, be creative, show commitment, work cooperatively and demonstrate caring.

Their generosity has the promise of multiplying in many ways – from putting a roof over Rover’s head to helping ReNew Brentwood for themselves and many families in the future.

Know a deserving dog? The colorful, 24-by-28-inch dog house is on display at the Brentwood Branch, 2214 Brentwood Blvd., and a photo of it is on the raffle box at the other library branches.

As one teacher added, man’s best friend will be happy to call it home.
