Scientists say mental challenges keep our brains healthy, and playing bridge is one of those challenging activities. Don’t know how to play? A four-week series – Introduction to Contract Bridge – began on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 6:30 p.m. for adults in the Library Center’s Story Hour Room.

Whether you’re a beginner or want to update your bidding and play, this series will help. Members of the Springfield Bridge Center will provide an introductory course over four Thursdays, continuing on Sept. 11, 18 and 25. You may register once for the entire series by calling 882-0714.

Several librarians have been offering a light-hearted program called Stories for Life in older adult living communities. It’s designed especially for older or memory-impaired adults. It provides simple stories, poetry and visual aids to encourage discussion and fun reminiscing.

Interested, or know someone who would benefit? The Midtown Carnegie Branch will host a Stories for Life session at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 9 in the upstairs meeting room. No registration is required.

Do you follow several of your favorite library branches on Facebook? This is just a reminder that now you can go to only one Facebook page for the latest news and program announcements, no matter which of the 10 library branches you visit most. As of Tuesday, you can visit facebook.com/thelibrary.org for conversations, fun tidbits and library news. After September, the individual branch pages will cease. Like us on Facebook, post comments and share with friends.

Save the date! We just confirmed it: Everyone is invited to talk via Skype to a real astronaut, Ozarks-born U.S Air Force Col. Michael Hopkins, at 3 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Library Center. Hopkins, who grew up in Richland, served on the International Space Station with two Russian cosmonauts for 166 days. He returned to Earth on March 10, 2014. The Skype event will kick off World Space Week at the libraries Oct. 3-9, which includes a family geocache challenge.
