Skype with an Astronaut Oct. 3; Library Observes National Bullying Prevention Month with Programs in October

If you could ask a NASA astronaut any question, what would it be?

Your chance is coming. U.S. Air Force Col. Michael Hopkins, a Lebanon/Richland native who spent 166 days on the International Space Station until March 10, 2014, will visit via Skype at 3 p.m. on Oct. 3 in the Library Center auditorium. All ages and questions are welcome. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can also meet badge requirements at this event.

Hopkins’ Skype visit kicks off World Space Week, celebrated annually Oct. 4-10. It includes a lineup of family activities including a geocache adventure challenge Oct. 3-10 with a Passport to Space available at most library branches. Details are in Bookends and at thelibrary.org/programs.

Hopkins gave earthlings stunning views from space on his Twitter account @AstroIllini, and continues to post about his life back on the planet with NASA. As part of Expedition 37/38 to the International Space Station on Sept. 25, 2013, Hopkins launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan with two Russian cosmonauts; others joined them later. During his stay aboard the space station, Hopkins and another U.S. astronaut conducted a pair of U.S. spacewalks to change out a degraded pump module for a total of 12 hours and 58 minutes. During the expedition, the crew completed 2,656 orbits of the Earth and traveled more than 70 million miles.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and the library district has a series of programs Oct. 2 through Oct. 27 that offers something for each age group. Programs for children address building positive attitudes and self-esteem. Now through Oct. 20, teens in grades 6-12 can enter the “Choose Kindness” Postcard Art competition for grades 6-12. Entry forms and guidelines are available at any library branch.

A program for children in grades 2-6 at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Brentwood Branch will encourage them to explore their emotions through art.

See a complete schedule in Bookends or by visiting thelibrary.org/programs.
