Carrie A. Nation
Ash Grove Commonwealth, July 11, 1901
"The military department of Missouri had an interesting interview with Mrs. Carrie Nation, in a railway train near Nevada, Mo., last week. Generals Dameron, Clark, and Quartermaster Emmet Newton were interviewed on the subject of army canteens etc. General Dameron was asked by the apostle of temperance to give her a diagram of the important battles he had fought. General Clark insisted that his reputation was made in the Spanish-American war, but modestly suggested that he had not been out of the United States, whereupon Mrs. Nation exclaimed: 'The bloodless battles you have fought will forever inscribe your name upon the Nation's' (not Carrie's) 'roll of honor.'
"Before separating from the party Mrs. Nation closed a deal with the Missouri generals to lecture at the forthcoming state encampment. Mrs. Nation then concluded her interview by committing a message to Governor Dockery through General Damerson in which she said: 'Tell the Governor to give me liberty or give me the hatchet.'"
There are several biographies of Carrie (Carry) A. Nation in the Library's catalog.
