Friends Fall Book Sale Runs Through Sunday; Hear A Mother Discuss Her Bullying Tragedy

Have you been to the huge Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale yet this week?

It continues today, Oct. 23, through Sunday, the traditional “Bag Day,” at Remington’s, 1655 W. Republic Road. Admission is free and it’s open to the public.

The selection is still great – the Friends are working off of their four tractor-trailer loads of books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, vinyl records and collectible items.

Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Friday, Oct. 24; then 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, which is Half-Price Day on everything. Sunday hours, Oct. 26, are 1-5 p.m. That day, Friends workers will provide sacks, and at checkout you pay only $1 for everything you can stuff in the sack; $5 from the Better Books section. (Please remember, the Friends can take only cash or checks.)

Thank you to everyone who has shopped the sale so far. Proceeds help your Springfield-Greene County Libraries provide many of the concerts, special programs and extras that you enjoy year-round.

Since 2007, Tina Meier has devoted herself to helping others understand and prevent bullying in hopes of saving lives, because she could not save her own daughter. Megan committed suicide in 2006 after being bullied online by an adult neighbor posing as a teenage boy.

As executive director of the Megan Meier Foundation, she takes her personal story to teen and adult audiences across the country in hopes of giving courage to those being bullied, and to make all ages aware that words can kill.

Meier will speak from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, at the Brentwood Branch Library, capping the Library’s month-long series for National Bullying Prevention Month. Her talk will also be simulcast at the Library Center, the Library Station and Midtown Carnegie Branch. Families are encouraged to attend; some material discussed may be inappropriate for small children.

Meier’s goal is to provide an overview of the words and technology that students and adults use today against each other, and how to diffuse bullying. For more information call 883-1974.
