Enjoy Halloween Fun at the Library; View Displays by Local Artists

Families can scare up some Halloween fun this week at the libraries, and on Saturday celebrate a Mexican tradition, Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos.

Today, Oct. 30, is Frankenstein Day at 3:15 p.m. for grades 6-12 at the Midtown Carnegie Branch, with a classic Frankenstein film and games.

Friday, the Republic Branch has Little Monster’s Storytime at 10 a.m. for infants-age 6 – costumes encouraged. The Library Center has storytimes at 9:30, 10:15 and 11:15 a.m. in the Story Hour Room, each with a costume and trick-or-treat parade through the library. At 6-8 p.m., teens in grades 6-8 have their own costume party with treats in the Library Station Santa Fe Room.

The Day of the Dead celebration is 2 p.m. Saturday for all ages in the Midtown Carnegie Branch. The Mexican holiday honors loved ones who have died. Following tradition, we invite everyone to bring a photo of a late family member, friend or pet for a craft; other materials will be provided. Sample sweet pan de muerto, learn the holiday’s history and watch a performance by Grupo Latinoamericano Dance Troupe.

Did you know you can see – and sometimes purchase – paintings, sculpture and other works by local artists at five library branches every day? Most displays change monthly, so Saturday kicks off a new round of displays at some of the branches, others are held over from October.

New in November are World War II posters provided by John Houghton at the Library Center; Quill Work and Flintnapping by Faith Flanders and Handmade Native American items from the collection of White Eagle and Usdi Wohali at the Midtown Carnegie Branch; photos by James Wiebe at the Park Central Branch; and original charcoal drawings by Lynley Farris at the Republic Branch.
