Consider a Gift to the Library Foundation on Dec. 2, "Giving Tuesday"

"Giving Tuesday," Dec. 2, is like Christmas for many nonprofit organizations, and The Library Foundation is no exception. While retail stores have "Black Friday" and online sellers have "Cyber Monday," nonprofit organizations are encouraging folks to remember them on "Giving Tuesday" to support their good works.

The Library Foundation raises funds year-round for special programs, events, materials and facility renovations for the Springfield-Greene County Library District, but is hoping that on Tuesday Springfield and Greene County residents will "show their love" for their library district. Donations to The Library Foundation can be made online on the library's website thelibrary.org, or The Library Foundation's website, yourlibraryfoundation.org. Checks also can be sent to P.O. Box 760, Springfield, MO 65801-0760.

The Library Foundation recently kicked off a $2.5 million capital campaign to renovate the much-loved Brentwood Branch Library. When the Brentwood Branch opened near the corner of Glenstone Avenue and Seminole Street in 1971, it resonated with the latest in technology, library tools and space to spread out. By comparison, the only other public library facility in the city was Main Library (now Midtown Carnegie Branch) on Central Street, which was becoming crowded, cramped and inconvenient for a growing suburban population in south Springfield. Now 43 years later, the Brentwood Branch is facing similar issues of crowding and obsolete technology.

Some of the upgrades planned include an addition to the front of the building for a new reading room with lots of natural light and comfortable seating; a drive-through window for checkouts and drop-offs; more public parking; a dedicated computer area away; and more expansive and imaginatively designed areas for children and teens.

The campaign has raised slightly more than half of the $2.5 million goal, but renovations won’t begin until most or all the funds are raised.

Greene County and Springfield residents can provide a much-needed boost to this campaign on Giving Tuesday with their gifts to The Library Foundation. Naming opportunities are also available for significant gifts to the campaign. Contact Valerie Richardson at foundation@thelibrary.org or call 616-0586 for more information.
