Library's Holiday Store Makes Shopping Fun for Kids

Children share the giving spirit during the holidays, and the Library has a fun, kid-friendly store where they can shop for Moms and Dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters, teachers and friends.

It’s the annual Holiday Store, and it kicks off Dec. 6 at the Library Center, Library Station and the Brentwood Branch Library. Children through age 18 are welcome to shop. The store is sponsored by the Between Friends Gift Shops. Library meeting rooms are transformed into holiday-themed stores packed with gifts priced at 25 cents- $5. Children love that they can buy a nice, $1.50 money clip for Dad, $3 jewelry for Mom and still get something for a best friend.

Library volunteers help the children shop for everyone on their gift list while staying within their budget. The volunteers help wrap and tag each item so the gifts remain a secret, while Mom or Dad pays.

This year’s stores include 2015 calendars for $1.50-$2, popcorn yarn slipper socks for $2.50 and lots of jewelry. There are more choices for boys and men including pewter money clips, talking mustache key chains, flashlights and fishing-themed ornaments and gifts. Kids’ gifts include puzzles, Webkinz, Ty babies, toy cars and kick balls.

Kids will also enjoy the Holiday Open House Dec. 6. Get in on games, snacks and holiday crafts, and get your picture taken with Santa Claus.

The Library Center Holiday Store is 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6; 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. daily and 1-4 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 14. The Holiday Open House is 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 6. Santa will be there from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The Library Station and Brentwood Branch Holiday Stores are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, only. Their Holiday Open Houses are 10 a.m.-noon that day, and Santa will visit both sites from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Children take pride in having their own affordable, shopping adventure and working within a budget. And they benefit, too. Proceeds from the sales go directly to the children’s Summer Reading Program -- $3,313.98 in 2013.
