Visit by Author Jan Brett and Holiday Store Kick Off Holiday Season at the Library

The holidays have officially started at the Springfield-Greene County Libraries, and we’ve got your gifts all wrapped up.

On Friday, Dec. 5, meet best-selling author and illustrator Jan Brett, whose 35 children’s books include her newest, “The Animals’ Santa.” You can get photos with her and mascot Hedgie at 4 p.m., she will give a talk and drawing demonstration at 5 p.m. and sell and sign her “Animals’ Santa” book and other titles beginning at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Library Center, Library Station and Brentwood Branch will host their annual Holiday Open House for children from 10 a.m.-noon. Kids will be treated to stories, crafts, games, snacks and photos with Santa Claus at 10:30-11:30 a.m. at all three sites. (It’s magic – he can do that.)

Bring the kids to the Holiday Store that day, too. They love to shop for friends and family, and they can afford the gifts priced from 25 cents to $5. The store runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, only, at the Library Station and Brentwood Branch. The Library Center store is 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8- Saturday, Dec. 13; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 and 14.

If you’re near Ash Grove on Saturday, Dec. 6, bring the kids to the Ash Grove Branch Holiday Open House at 8:30 a.m.-noon for refreshments, a craft and the movie “Polar Express.” Then stay cozy inside and watch the Ash Grove Christmas Parade pass by.
On Tuesday, Dec. 9, parents and children in preschool-grade 4 can craft a Christmas card and sip some hot cocoa from 3-6 p.m. at the Strafford Branch Library.

Then Springfield Symphony’s Brass Quintet returns for its annual Holiday Horns concert at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, upstairs in the Midtown Carnegie Branch. The Friends of the Library sponsors this fun, free event, and library staff will serve beverages and snacks.

And we’re just getting started. Learn more about upcoming events at thelibrary.org, or pick up a free copy of Bookends at your library branch.
