Sign Up for Text Alerts to Receive Library Notifications on Your Mobile Phone

If you’re eager to know when a book or other library material that you’ve put on “hold” is ready for pickup, we have a new service to help you. Now you can sign up to receive a text message alert on your mobile phone that your hold item is in. It also allows you to renew your items just by sending us a text message.

“We are always evaluating new technologies and implementing them when possible to provide better service for our patrons,” says Renee Brumett, electronic resources librarian.

“We are particularly attentive to mobile trends as we see usage of mobile devices climb,” she adds. “We want to save the time of our users while continuing to connect them with quality, relevant information and services.”

The service sends out the texts between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., usually within minutes of the item arriving at the branch you’ve designated for pickup.

You will continue to receive email due-date reminders, overdue notices and hold pickup/cancellation notices via email, phone or U.S. mail, whichever you have designated.

Here’s how to sign up for text alerts:

On thelibrary.org/catalog, log in to “My Account.” (If you log in via Encore, just click on "Edit account.") Next, click "Manage Email Notices and Text Alerts." Enter your mobile phone number in "Mobile Phone No." A mobile phone number may be used to send notices for only one library account. Read the Terms & Conditions/Privacy policy, check the “Opt-in” box, and then scroll to the bottom of the form and click "Submit.” You will receive an opt-in invitation message to the mobile number you submitted. Respond to the message to complete the process.

To renew items by text once you’re signed up, text the word “Renew” to 35143. Or, when you receive an alert that your library materials are due in two days, reply “Renew.” Only the items that are eligible for renewal will be renewed. You will receive a confirmation text that the items were renewed.
