Gravestone Preservation Workshop
Saturday, July 25, 2009. Jon Appell, gravestone conservator, will conduct a gravestone preservation workshop at the historic Squibb Cemetery.
Dr. C. Mark Rose of Richmond, Missouri, and Rose Marie Jones of Willard, Missouri, will host a one-day, hands-on workshop in gravestone preservation. Mr. Jonathan Appell, monumental mason from Connecticut, will demonstrate how to repair old gravestones, slow or reverse weather-related deterioration and stabilize stones which have begun to lose their integrity. The one-day workshop begins at 9 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. or when finished. The workshop will be held at Squibb Cemetery 6 miles west of Springfield, Mo. Take Highway 266 (Old Route 66) west to Yeakley Chapel. Turn north [right] on Farm Road 65 to farm road 132, then turn west [left] to farm road 63. Turn north [right] to the cemetery -- watch for signs. A $20 donation or more is suggested. Any money over the amount of costs will be donated to the Squibb Cemetery. Photographing and taping is allowed. Bring lawn chairs, umbrellas, a cooler with your lunch and beverages and gloves for hands-on training. Toilet facilities will be available but there will be no running water.
