Author Series Continues Aug. 1 with Miyoko Hikiji; Join Us for Scholastic Book Night Aug. 3 at Hammons Field

The summer author series at the Springfield-Greene County Library continues Saturday, Aug. 1, featuring a woman veteran with a warrior’s tale.

Her book is “All I Could Be: My Story as a Woman Warrior in Iraq.” The event is at 2 p.m. in the Brentwood Branch community room, and it is sponsored by The Library Foundation.

Miyoko Hikiji spent her military career in both the active duty U.S. Army and the Iowa National Guard. She was mobilized twice – once after Sept. 11 and again in 2003 for a year-long deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Now she is an author and a member of the National Women Veterans Speakers Bureau. In this presentation, “Your Inner Warrior: Discover, Accept, Deploy,” she shares how to find your inner warrior, including how to be an active participant-observer of your life and tap into your personal resources to give you renewed purpose and passion for every day.

Copies of Miyoko’s book, "All I Could Be: My Story as a Woman Warrior in Iraq," will be available for purchase and signing.

Books and baseball are bosom buddies at the Monday, Aug. 3, Springfield Cardinals matchup with the Tulsa Drillers.

The first 800 children who purchase “theme tickets” through the Cardinals and attend the game will receive a free copy of the book “Tombquest” Book 1 of Book of the Dead by Michael Northrop. The books are courtesy of a collaboration between the Cardinals and children’s book publisher, Scholastic.

Before the game, children will be invited to the outfield where Cardinals players read from the book. Everyone is invited to drop by the library booth on the concourse to pick up program schedules, bookmarks and other giveaways.

For ticket and reading time details, or to order tickets and reserve books, call the Springfield Cardinals ticket line, 417-863-2143. Offer valid only with purchase of a Reserved Seat and mentioning “Scholastic Book Night.” Present Scholastic Book Night ticket to receive book beginning at 6:10 p.m. at Gate 1 Patio.
