Quirky Christmas

If you feel like reading something a little different from the mainstream seasonal romance books this holiday season, check out one of these offbeat Christmas titles.

Awkward Family Holiday Photos by Mike Bender and Doug Chernack. From the authors of the New York Times bestsellers Awkward Family Photos and Awkward Family Pet Photos comes a celebration of those special times throughout the year when our families embarrass us the most...the holidays.

The Book of Holiday Awesome by Neil Pasricha. This little book describes all the small things that make the holidays great. Entries include successfully regifting a present to someone who wants it and knowing that Kwanzaa is worth more Scrabble points than Hanukkah or Christmas.

A Christmas Story by Jean Shepherd. This edition gathers together in one hilarious volume the gems of autobiographical humor that Jean Shepherd drew upon to create the enduring film "A Christmas Story." Here is young Ralphie Parker's unstoppable campaign to get Santa (or anyone else) to give him a Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle.

Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris. This best-selling classic features six works on the joys and embarrassments of favorite holidays in a volume that includes tales of tardy trick-or-treaters, the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to another culture, and a barnyard Secret Santa scheme gone awry.

Spending the Holidays with People I Want to Punch in the Throat : Yuletide Yahoos, Ho-Ho-Humblebraggers, and Other Seasonal Scourges by Jen Mann. For fans of Laurie Notaro and Jenny Lawson comes an uproarious and oddly endearing essay collection for anyone trying to survive the holidays in one piece. When it comes to time-honored holiday traditions, Jen Mann pulls no punches.

The Truth about Santa : Wormholes, Robots and What Really Happens on Christmas Eve by Gregory Mone. Gregory Mone uses science and technology to overturn the assumption that Santa can't be real. Drawing on the work of accomplished scientists and researchers, Mone gives us a whole new portrait of this remarkable man and the miracles he makes happen every year.

A Very Klingon Khristmas by Paul Ruditis ; illustrated by Patrick Faricy. The author recounts, in rhyming verse, the treasured children's story of the birth of the revered warrior Kahless and celebrates the rich Klingon Khristmas traditions originating on Qo'noS and spreading across the Star Trek universe.

You Better Not Cry by Augusten Burroughs. In this caustically funny, nostalgic, poignant and moving collection Augusten Burroughs recounts Christmases past and present as only he could. With wit and illuminated prose, he shows how the holidays bring out the worst in us and sometimes, just sometimes, the very, very best.
