New Newspapers

The Springfield-Greene County Library District has expanded its newspaper microfilm collection. Previously, the Local History & Genealogy Department's microfilm focused on newspapers from Greene County, such as the News-Leader and the Ash Grove Commonwealth. The expanded collection adds many of the earliest newspapers from the surrounding counties in the Ozarks.

Now Available in the Local History & Genealogy Department at the Library Center:

Greenfield Vedette Dade County) 1867-1946

Lawrence County Chieftain 1876-1946

Billings Times (Christian County) 1900-1953

Douglas County Herald 1887-1942

Marshfield Mail (Webster County) 1893-1935

Buffalo Reflex (Dallas County) 1878-1928

Bolivar Free Press (Polk County) 1868-1932

The years covered are approximate. As with all newspapers on microfilm, there may be missing issues and even missing years, especially with the earliest dates of a paper. These papers cover a significant period of Ozarks history, and provide greater regional coverage for genealogical research.

A look at the Buffalo Reflex for February 8, 1878, begins one article "Nothing of very great importance has occurred in our district this week" followed by an article reporting the murder of George Murphey by Willis Hendricks and the shooting of Peter Looney "an inoffensive old man" by person or persons unknown.

The Library's newspaper microfilm collection will continue to grow. Look for these newspapers to be available soon:

Carthage Evening Press (Jasper County) 1941-1945

Cassville Democrat (Barry County) 1899-1925

Lebanon Rustic (Laclede County) 1903-1919

Mnt. Grove Journal (Wright County) 1898-1921

In addition to the microfilm, the Springfield-Greene County Library has also added new newspaper databases, including Newspapers.com, St. Louis Post-Dispatch Historical and America's Obituaries and Death Notices. They can be accessed through the Local History page. Home access requires a Springfield-Greene County Library card.
