Join Exploring Human Origins Discussions at Upcoming Events; Party with Ponies May 14 at Library Station; Friends of the Library Celebrate Second-highest Book Sale Total

The Smithsonian Institution exhibit “Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean To Be Human?” opened May 9 in the Library Center, and we invite you to join in the discussion during the upcoming events. See a complete list at thelibrary.org/exploringhumanorigins or in the library’s Bookends magazine.

Among the community partners that have guided the programming are Missouri State and Drury universities’ experts in the sciences and religion. Two are featured at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, in the Library Center auditorium. MSU’s Dr. Suzanne Walker-Pacheco and Drury’s Dr. Kevin Jansen return to explain the basics of evolutionary science, dispel myths and misconceptions, and answer audience questions.

On Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium, we feature Faith and Science in Exploring Human Origins, a thoughtful exploration of the exhibit with Walker-Pacheco; Jansen; the Rev. Mark Struckhoff, executive director of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks; and Dr. Peter Browning, Drury chaplain and professor of philosophy and religion.

Kids love ponies, and the Library Station, 2535 N. Kansas Expressway, is having a Pony Party with live miniature ponies from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14, on the south parking lot. A parent/guardian signature is required to pet the ponies, which are provided courtesy of Plenty Pony Ranch and the Valley Water Mill Park Equestrian Center.

Besides ponies, the library staff plans stick-horse races, saddles to try out, information on the care of ponies and horses, a lasso-roping station and pony stories for the little ones. The event is free and open to all ages. For details call 865-1340.

In case you haven’t heard, the Friends of the Library celebrated their second-highest sales total ever during the Spring Book Sale that ended May 1 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds E*Plex. Shoppers from across the Ozarks and surrounding states helped the Friends reach $135,958.23 in sales. You benefit, of course, because proceeds from Friends’ sales fund concerts, summer programs, books for preschoolers and library improvements.
