Few people wish to be on the pointy end of an editorial cartoonist’s pen, yet many were secretly flattered when artists such as Bob Palmer lampooned them decades ago in the pages of the Springfield Newspapers. Long before him was Charles Werner, Jon Kennedy and Betty Love.

Learn about the long and sometimes prickly tradition of hometown cartooning in Sketches from Springfield: A Cartoon History at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, in the Library Center auditorium.

Parents and educators have a new, online source for raising happy kids, and who doesn’t want that? It’s the overhauled and improved Library’s Kids page, thelibrary.org/kids.

It’s a fast and easy way to see upcoming programs for children and families, find age-appropriate booklists for birth-age 12; links to e-books, movies and music; homework help; a parent blog; a catalog of educational toys to check out; educator resources; and a Racing to Read page with ideas for activities to build early literacy.

If you frequent the Dan Kinney Family Center in east Springfield, you can exercise your mind at the same time at a library-sponsored computer class. Through December, Edge Mobile classes normally held at the Brentwood Branch Library (now under renovation) are continuing at the Park Board’s facility at 2701 S. Blackman Road.

Upcoming classes for adults include E-mail for Beginners, File Management, Learning Windows 10, Staying Safe & Secure in a Digital World, and your choice of self-paced tutorials. You can call the Edge Community Technology Center for dates and details at 837-5011.

September is celebrated nationally in the library world as Library Card Sign-up Month. If you already have one, you know the benefits of “membership” – access to books, movies and music; online research and business sites; foreign language learning and courses through Lynda.com; e-books and all manner of e-entertainment.

Know someone who’s missing out on those and other advantages? Send them our way to sign up for a library card – in September, or anytime.
