Oscar Fryer and Benjamin Finkle

Finkle's time at Drury equals assistant's age.
Springfield News & Leader, September 13, 1936 page A-8.

"Dr. Benjamin Franklin Finkle was teaching physics at Drury College before Oscar Fryer was born. Not much before, to be sure. He came to Drury 42 years ago, and Doctor Fryer is 40 now – so the span of the younger man's life is virtually the same as the span of Doctor Findle's years at Drury.

"Doctor Fryer grew up and came to Drury as a student, attended Doctor Finkle’s physics classes and was graduated in ’25. Now he is coming back to Drury to become Doctor Finkle’s first assistant in the physics department. There have been assistants in mathematics before; but for his new assistant’s lifetime, Doctor Finkle has taught the physics classes single-handed.

"This picture shows the reunion of the two yesterday – once professor and pupil, now to become associates. Doctor and Mrs. Finkle returned Friday night after spending the summer in their country home in Ohio. Doctor Finkle had a wonderful time, lost 30 pounds and came back feeling like a bull moose.

"Doctor Fryer and his family yesterday were moving into their new home at 718 Kickapoo. Doctor Fryer has been studying and teaching for the past two years at the University of Indiana, where he took his Ph.D. degree this summer. Before that he was for five years at the Carnegie Institute of Technology at Pittsburgh, PA."

Dr. Fryer died in 1999 at 103 years old. The photo of Dr. Fryer in a football uniform is from the Springfield High School 1925 year book. For more information about Dr. Fryer see Dr. Oscar Fryer: a Drury treasure by Harriett Kinloch Heimburger Price.
