Learn to Play Bridge in January; Temporary Brentwood Branch Closes Dec. 23; Libraries Close for Holidays Dec. 24-26 and Jan. 1-2

If you’re at the stage where the gift of an “experience” is preferred over the gift of a “thing,” here’s an experience you can give to yourself – and to a few friends – this season, and it won’t cost a dime.

Come and learn to play contract bridge at a series Jan. 5-26. Members of the Bridge Center will teach an introductory course for adults from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on four consecutive Thursdays in the Library Center Story Hour Room. Registration is underway, so just call 883-5341.

Don’t worry if you’re not already a card player, says Connie White, with the Bridge Center. The lessons are structured and go step by step, so no one feels lost. As evidence of that, she says, about 40 percent of the men and women who have taken the introductory course at the library in the past have gone on to play regularly.

“It’s a great way to challenge your brain, and people like the socialization aspect,” White says. “One woman who comes regularly is in her 80s, and she told me, ‘I look forward to it all week long.’”

While others have been counting down the days to Christmas, library staff have been counting the days until they permanently close the temporary Brentwood Branch to prepare for the move to the renovated, renamed Schweitzer Brentwood Branch. That day comes on Friday, Dec. 23, at the regular 6:30 p.m. closing time.

Patrons have enjoyed the temporary branch in the Brentwood Center, but we wager it will be a distant memory when they find discover convenience and comfort in their “new” neighborhood library on grand reopening day, Saturday, Jan. 7.
