Renovated Schweitzer Brentwood Branch Library Grand Opening Jan. 7

The wait is nearly over – the renovated and renamed Schweitzer Brentwood Branch Library reopens Saturday, Jan. 7. New name, same address – 2214 Brentwood Blvd., a block east of Glenstone Avenue and Seminole Street.

Just before 10 a.m. we’ll open the south doors to the community room for a brief welcome, then head outside to the main entrance for a good, old-fashioned ribbon cutting before inviting you inside.

Feel free to wander around and get the lay of the land. It’s open until 6 p.m. Ask a library staffer to give you a quick tour – we’ll be the ones wearing “How may I help you?” buttons. Catch the 3:30 p.m. concert for families with Dallas Jones.

We didn’t undertake a major renovation to pretty up an old building – we did it to give you a better experience when you’re there.

The atmosphere is brighter; the air is better thanks to a design that meets top energy and environmental standards. Pre-renovation, the 1971 boiler was so cantankerous at times that staff worked in gloves and knitted scarves in winter, or wilted in the summer humidity.

The reading room is bigger and sunny, while providing private spaces. A glassed-in conference room, study tables and a new cyber bar are wired for data and power jacks for your portable devices. Settle into your own personal work space, a cocoon-like Brody WorkLounge.

Adult fiction, new books and large-print books are up front. We lowered the height of all the shelving for easy browsing. Movie and music fans have their own space to lounge or browse audiovisuals. You can buy a hot drink from Coffee Between Friends. Teens have a space of their own, with booth and bistro table seating for meet-ups with friends. Children have lots of space, with extra room for storytimes. We’ll be open on 1-5 p.m. Sundays, too, with drive-through service seven days a week.

Patrons have long told us they wanted “better,” not necessarily bigger; they preferred Brentwood retain its neighborhood scale and feel. We hope you’ll find it here.
