One Read Programs and Exhibits Focus on "Finding Winnie" and World War I

"Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear" by Lindsay Mattick and illustrated by Sophie BlackallEach April, the Library invites the community to celebrate one special book. In the “One Read,” we encourage everyone to read the same book and attend the author and scholar talks, book discussions and exhibits that expand on the book’s themes.

This year’s title is the tenderly told, true story of Winnie the Pooh. In 1914 a Canadian veterinarian rescued a baby bear, named him after his hometown of Winnipeg, and traveled with him to Europe and World War I.

The book is Lindsay Mattick’s “Finding Winnie, The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear.” Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Sophie Blackall will speak at a free event for all ages at 7 p.m. April 13 at the Springfield Art Museum.

It’s a timely tale for families to enjoy together. April marks the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I. On that theme, WWI-era “Maisie Dobbs” mystery series author Jacqueline Winspear will also speak at 7 p.m. April 20 at the Library Center.

Families can take a StoryWalk at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at Dickerson Park Zoo. Librarians will lead families along a path while reading “Finding Winnie” posted page by page on signposts. Zoo staff will provide more activities until 2 p.m. Children ages 3-12 get in free if they bring their bear along.

Details for all the programs are at thelibrary.org/oneread or call 882-0714.

At 2 p.m. Sunday in the Library Center auditorium, the Patriotic Piecemakers of the Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild will host a special Quilts of Valor presentation, giving Quilts of Valor to invited military combat veterans to honor them for their service.

Meet at the Park Central Branch at 10:30 a.m. April 4 and 8 for another “Finding Winnie” StoryWalk around the Square storefronts.

Noted World War I historian Dr. Jay Winter will talk about The Revolution of Violence in WWI at 6 p.m. April 5 in the Fox Theater, History Museum on the Square. Books will be available for purchase and signing only from 4-5:30 p.m.
