Experience World War I in Different Ways for All Ages: Art, Movies, StoryWalks and Scholarly Talks
The Library staff invites you to experience World War I in a very different way – with a storybook about Winnie the Pooh, an art exhibit inspired by WWI stories, an easy-to-digest “sampler” of war topics including Native American Code Talkers, a WWI-era mystery series author, a talk that kids will love about the role animals played in the war and more. The programs are part of the Library’s One Read in April. We're inviting all ages to read the featured title, "Finding Winnie, The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear," and attend many of the programs planned for you.

On Friday, April 7, from 5-7:30 p.m. at Waverly House Gifts & Gallery, 2013 S. Waverly Ave., attend a reception for the winners of a juried art show inspired by the literature of WWI. The exhibit will remain up through April 29. The art is at times sobering, other times tranquil.
Poppies make an appearance in many of the works, the poppy being the symbol of remembrance of World War I. In observance of the One Read's nod to WWI, the Library is providing ceramic poppy pins for attendees at this and other One Read programs. Be sure to pick up one this month!
The Moxie is showing two iconic WWI films – “Paths of Glory” at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, and “A Farewell to Arms,” 1 p.m. Saturday, April 15. Admission is free.
Sunday, April 9, is Animals of the Allies at 2 p.m. at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch for all ages.
Monday, April 10, at noon for adults in the Republic Branch, bring your letters, photos and objects of WWI to share and compare with others.
Later at 7 p.m. in the Library Station Frisco Room is The Great War in Springfield, how local residents supported the war effort in Greene County.
