Adventurer Sue Schuble Gives a Virtual Tour of Her Five-Day River Kayaking Trip
Adventurer Sue Schuble is a favorite among the Library’s Ozarks Travelogues. She shows the same passion for travel and discovery as she did as the head Kickapoo High girls’ basketball and volleyball coach (for which she was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1998!) She has led us on exciting virtual tours with spectacular photographs of the “real” Cuba, Madagascar, Brazil and beyond.
So you won’t want to miss joining Sue on a virtual tour of her five-day fall kayaking trip down the Current River during the next Ozarks Travelogue at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, in the Library Center auditorium. She gives us a preview here:
What was the route of your trip?
The show will include two river trips, one in each fall of 2015 and 2016, covering about 90 miles on the Current River from Tan Vat in Montauk State Park to Big Springs State Park (eight days). We camped mostly on gravel bars but also at a few campgrounds such as Cedargrove and Round Spring.
What were the scenic highlights along the river for you?
Fall colors, serenity and peacefulness, flora, fauna, limestone bluffs
How did you prepare for and pack for a five-day river trip?
We were in enclosed kayaks so we packed lightly but smartly and put gear and food in waterproof stuff sacks; freeze-dried meals, dehydrated foods; 1-cup Jet Boil
Where did you leave the river to explore inland?
There were several Missouri Department of Conservation Natural Areas we explored, parts of Ozark Trail, springs and caves, historical buildings and homesteads
What three pieces of advice would you give to someone considering a trip like yours?
Plan for the worst (weather) but expect the best, pack as lightly as possible without sacrificing warm clothing, leave a detailed plan in car and at home.
What was the biggest challenge you faced on the five-day trip?
We flipped once and had to track down one of our paddles.
