View Wilderness, Space and the Great War on a Grand Scale in June at the Library

We can only describe three upcoming Library Center events as “art on a grand scale.” You’ll see it in Arkansas photographer Tim Ernst’s big-screen slide show; an Explore Space exhibit and a giant World War I exhibit, Missouri and the Great War.

Ernst visits Friday, June 9, in the auditorium. At 5 p.m., it’s A Rare Quality of Light: 40 Years of Wilderness Photography. At 7 p.m. see Arkansas in My Own Backyard, based on Tim’s stunning photos made within a 12-mile radius of his wilderness home. His books and photographs will be available for purchase and signing.

Beginning Thursday, June 8, through Aug. 14, buckle up for a cosmic journey, Explore Space. The traveling exhibit is from the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute. This all-ages exhibit explores the formation of planetary systems, asteroids and comets, the impact of solar storms on Earth and more.

Space-related programs are also planned all summer, beginning with StarLab: Native American Sky Legends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, for grades K-12. A StarLab planetarium tour explores the mythology Native American cultures tied to the constellations. Our presenter will lead groups into the StarLab every 25 minutes, so register for your preferred time at 616-0526.

See the full schedule in Bookends or visit thelibrary.org/explorespace.

For one week June 11-17, catch a sneak preview of Missouri and the Great War, a traveling exhibit in the concourse commemorating Missourians' many roles in World War I.

It then travels to the Capitol in Jefferson City for an official opening July 11. It will journey throughout Missouri, and return to Springfield in November 2018 for an extended showing and a series of programs at the Library Center.

It was developed by the Missouri Humanities Council and the Springfield-Greene County Library District, with funding from the Missouri Humanities Council, Friends of the Springfield-Greene County Library District, and the RDW Family and Community Fund. It was designed by Library Art Director Danny Dye and the Local History & Genealogy Department.

Vickie Hicks is community relations director for the Springfield-Greene County Library District. She can be reached at vickieh@thelibrary.org.
