Explore Space with the Library this Summer
Have you ventured to the Library Center yet to Explore Space? That’s the new exhibit sure to appeal to space- and science-loving kids, teens and adults. We’re pairing it with space-themed programs throughout the summer.
The Library was awarded the traveling exhibit through Aug. 4 by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute.
“Space exploration and research help us answer the age-old questions: ‘Where did we come from?’ and ‘Are we alone?’” says Youth Services Coordinator Nancee Dahms-Stinson. “The display and the variety of programs the Library has developed to support it, makes learning about space science and astronomy fun for all ages.”

- At 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, in Library Center meeting room A, grades 4-6 can learn about the realities of space travel and build their own spacecraft in a hands-on program. Materials will be provided.
- Friday, June 16, at 3 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium, grades 4-8 are invited to live-action role play – LARP – for a Mars experience. “Lost on Mars LARP” repeats at 6:30 p.m. for grades 9-12. The scenario: You have just arrived on Mars and must establish a colony, find food and learn to live in space. As you settle in, people become sick and are attacked by a mysterious presence. Can you survive living on Mars? Registration is underway; call 616-0526.
- At 7 p.m. Monday, June 19, in the Library Center auditorium, adults are invited to hear a fantastic true story, “American Eclipse,” by author David Baron. In July 1878, three pioneering scientists – planet hunter James Craig Watson, astronomer Maria Mitchell and inventor Thomas Edison – gathered in Colorado to view a total solar eclipse. Baron shares their stories in "American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World." Books will be available for purchase and signing.
- Stay after Baron’s talk for sky gazing from 8-10 p.m. Weather permitting, members of the Springfield Astronomical Society will set up telescopes on the Library Center south lawn for solar and lunar viewing.
