This Week at the Library: LibraryCon, Hiking the Buffalo River Trail and Yoga

A little boy poses with cosplayers in "Star Wars" character costumes during LibraryCon 2016. The Library Center will be teaming with Star Wars Storm Troopers, Jedi Knights, comic book superheroes and sci-fi and fantasy literature favorites on Saturday, Aug. 19. Add to that mix the scores of kids, teens and adult fans who relish in “cosplay” – dressing up in character – and you’ve got LibraryCon.

It’s our third annual LibraryCon, a free, family-friendly fandom blowout. It will take over the building from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. that day, so if you need a calmer space to work, your other nine library branches will welcome you!

Guest speakers and panelists from the comic book industry include writers and illustrators Javier Saltares, Cullen Bunn, Jeremy Haun, Shayne Silvers. We’ll have panels about comic book writing and illustrating, Geeky Storytime, Jedi Academy for kids and teens, fandom meetups, costume design tips and a separate Cosplay Fashion Show for kids, teens and adults. More than 50 vendors representing the comic book, cosplay and gamer industries will also have booths.

For details, visit thelibrary.org/librarycon, or pick up a brochure at any of the 10 branches.

Did you know? “Carry the Card” is our motto to encourage you to bring your library card to check out materials. It’s a security measure against identity theft. But if you forget it, there’s an answer: Take a clear photo of your card’s bar code with your cell phone or other mobile device, and we’ll accept that at checkout. You can also download it to an app designed for storing loyalty cards.
