Books Offer Perspectives on Vietnam War; Garden Railway Expo and Thomas the Tank Engine Day Sept. 30

Ken Burns’ documentary series “Vietnam War: An Intimate History” airing on PBS is a talker around the office, school and dinner table.

If you’re eager to explore the material more, look for the companion book coming soon to library shelves. You can be among the first to read a copy by reserving one at thelibrary.org/catalog. Several other books and audiobooks have been published in 2017 with perspectives on the war.

Two recent books also explore the Vietnam War era for younger readers and researchers:

The Ozark Garden Railway Society is rolling in for an all-day expo devoted to model railway and train enthusiasts on Saturday, Sept. 30 at, appropriately, the Library Station. Full Steam Ahead: Garden Railway Expo runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and there’s something for all ages. For more details call 865-1340.

Catch several come-and-go activities from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. including a Kit Bashing Come and Go, a kind of swap meet with train kit pieces. Outside on the south parking lot, the Railway Society members will state a Train Trailer and activities for kids.  The engineered train trailer folds down on all sides so you can view the detailed train layout inside complete with two trains and multiple dioramas.

Also from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Children’s Department, kids age 2-6 can enjoy Thomas the Tank Engine Day. The Railway Society members maintain the Station’s model train year-round. This time they’re bringing Thomas the Tank Engine and friends. Watch them chug down the track, and join us for stories, crafts and games.
