Veterans Day

In his 1954 Veterans Day Proclamation [pdf] President Eisenhower marked November 11 as Veterans Day. Before this pronouncement, between the first and second World Wars, November 11 was celebrated as Armistice Day.

From the 1954 proclamation:

"On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there are 23,579,000 veterans in the United States.  Missouri is home to over 523,000 of those veterans according the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Locally, The Springfield Veterans Day Parade is scheduled to be held on November 9 at 11 a.m. All libraries will be closed Wednesday, November 11, for Veteran's Day.
