Southwest Missouri State University Pool in 1952
Southwest Missouri State University pool in the summer of 1952 from Bias Magazine, June 24, 1952, page 13.
"The town’s swimming pools did a splashing trade during last week’s heat wave, and none was more popular than the one at SMS [now known as MSU], which is available only to SMS students, teachers and anyone else fortunate enough to come by a pass. The temperature was hovering about the 90-degree mark, but this pool full of bathers in both water and sun didn’t mind. It was a typical afternoon at SMS pool. The pools at the city parks were even more crowded with seekers after relief from the long-continued sultriness."
A patron mentioned to me that she would attend Greenwood summer school just so she could get a pool pass. Below is a 1957 Sanborn Fire Insurance map showing the location of the pool on campus. Click to enlarge the image. The pool is in the center left section of the map.
