283rd Field Artillery battalion US Army Reserve.
Bias Magazine, August 19, 1952, page 6.

A few minutes before train time early Sunday morning, Lt. Col. William P. Sanford gave an order and the men of the 283rd Field Artillery battalion, U. S. Army Reserve, lined up beside a Pullman car at the Frisco station here for a pre-entrainment roll call.  The 283rd, made up of Springfield, Bolivar and Lebanon men, about to leave for its annual two weeks of training at Camp McCoy, Wis., where its officers and men will get plenty of experience in handling and firing the 40-ton 8-inch self-propelled howitzer, a piece of heavy artillery which hurls a 200 lb. projectile 10 miles.  Col. Sanford, commander of the 283rd, is a Springfield attorney.  He and his staff of officers and many of his men are World War II veterans.  After the roll call, as many of the 283rd's men as could, crowded into this photograph.
