Jacob Lawrence

The celebrated African-American painter Jacob Lawrence is known for social realism and narrative images.  Currently on view at the Springfield Art Museum are images by Lawrence of historical and social significance.  Some of the prints on display focus on the lives of John Brown, the abolitionist, and Toussaint L'Ouverture, leader of the struggle for the independence of Haiti.  His genre scenes describe men at work and children at play with the bold colors, angular figures and simple shapes that identify his style.

Presented courtesy of DC Moore Gallery, New York, this exhibition opened January 16, 2010, and continues through the month of February.

Online information and images for viewing are available through the Whitney Museum collection, Jacob Lawrence: Exploring Stories and  the Phillips Collection.

Several biographical sources are available through the Biography Resource Center* database on the Library's research pages.
