Rose O'Neill Remembered

In March of 2010 the National Women's History Project highlights past themes and honorees in recognition of their 30-year history. Among those listed as honored in 2008 is American artist and illustrator Rose O'Neill.

O’Neill is remembered as the creator of the commercially successful Kewpie doll with strong ties to the Ozarks. The family homestead she named Bonniebrook was her retreat from the celebrity scene of New York and Europe during the height of her popularity. Located near Branson, it would become her final resting place in 1944.

Recent books about O’Neill available at the library include "Rose O’Neill:  the Girl Who Loved to Draw" and "Rose Cecil O’Neill:  a Woman Ahead of Her Time."  The Illustrator in America, 1860-2000, Third Edition notes her election to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1999.

The Biography Resource Center* database offers a brief biography and the New York Times Historical* database has articles about her New York activities.
