Start Preparing for the Release of the 1940 Federal Population Census.

The National Archives and Record Center website recommends the following steps to prepare for the the April 2, 2012 release of the 1940 Census:

  • Make a list of all the people you want to look for in the 1940 census
  • Collect addresses for these people from city directories if they lived in a city
  • Identify the enumeration district (ED) in which each address was located

The National Archives and Record Center website allows you to view the blank census form and includes all of the questions asked in this enumeration.  The website also includes some very interesting information about the 1940 census;    mentioning a digital release, but nothing at all about microfilm. This could be the first census that must be viewed online.

Along with the usual census questions, the 1940 census form includes a question asking for the place of residence on 1 April 1935 as well as 1 April 1940.  This will help to locate ancestors who moved mid-census or those who married between 1930 and 1940.
